Dungiven 3-6
Castledawson 2-7
Since the reserve championship began in 1975 Dungiven have been the most successful club in this grade securing their sixth title against Castledawson. Their last title was in Centenary Year when Liam McCloskey was at the helm and he was back in charge again in ’92. In appalling conditions at Ballinascreen, Dungiven got the better of a gallant Castledawson in a game that was a credit to both teams.
Twenty minutes into the game St Malachy’s had built up a four point lead when Dungiven hit back in dramatic fashion. A brace of goals from firstly, Eugene Kealey and then from John A Mullan, saw them lead at the interval by 3-1 to 2-2.
The second half was a extremely close affair with both teams recording 0-5 as Dungiven held out for a narrow, but merited, two point win. Castledawson gave it their all in the last five minutes as they sought that vital goal but Dungiven’s defence stubbornly refused to yield. John Diamond’s final blast on the whistle brought to an end a very sporting and competitive county decider.
