A huge congratulations to St Canice’s Primary School who were crowned the All County Champions 2019.
On a night were playing conditions were far from ideal the lads served up a treat of football against some formidable teams. First up in the quarter finals the lads came up against a very well drilled Anahorish primary school team and the lads managed to get over the line by the slimmest of margins. In the semis they played a Faughanvale team buoyed with victory over Mayogall in their quarter final game. the game was in the balance at half time but the boys pulled away in the second half to reach the final.
The final itself was a nerve wrecking experience for the large crowd in the Owenbeg stand. The opponents were a very good Holy Family Primary side who came though the other side of the draw. The first half was a very close affair but it ended with St Canice’s two points down at the break. The second half was a roller coaster, St Canice’s battled back straight away but Holy Family regained the upper hand to extend the led to 6 points. But a Cahir O Neill goal halved that lead and that was followed by a Daithi McCloskey goal to tie the game. With the seconds ticking down and chances at a minimum a high ball into the Holy Family box was punched in again by Daithi McCloskey. The resulting kickout was the last act of the game. A great game that had it all, and the scenes from the lads at the final whistle will live long in the memory of these young men.
Congratulations also to Gaelscoil Neachtain who competed in Division 2 Championship. They played a very strong St Eoghans Moneyneena in the quarter finals, and unfortunately fell just short of the win. Losing by a single goal. The boys battled hard and will no doubt be back here on the big stage again soon. Maith thú lads
