Tuesday 21st May saw the coming together of schools from north of the county participating in their championship day.
Our feeder schools were well represented across the board. St Canice’s PS participating in Division 1, Gaelscoil Neachtain and St Johns Dernaflaw competing in Division 2.
Indeed the girls were also represented with St Canice’s girls in Division 1 and Dernaflaw girls in Division 2.
In the boys side of the championship there was some excellent football on show. St Johns Dernaflaw against Ballerin had an epic game with St Johns just nipping the win by two points after being behind at half time. St Canice’s too showed some great flair and teamwork in a game against Glenullin. Ebbing and flowing until St Canice’s PS ran out winners.

So it turned out to be that St Canice’s and Glenullin would eventually make their way to the Division 1 final and this game did not disappoint either. Both teams saved their best football of the day for the final, with some fantastic fielding, tackling and score taking on display. St Canice’s running out eventual winners with captain Paddy Higgins receiving the trophy on behalf of his team.

In Division 2 the semi final threw up a local derby with Gaelscoil Neachtain against St Johns Dernaflaw. It was a great match with only a point in it at halftime to Gaelscoil Neachtain. The second half continued much the same way that the first did in a close contest, only for Gealscoil Neachtain to pull away with a couple of well taken goals with a few minutes left to play. A great semi final with two very good teams. Gaelscoil Neachtain progressing onto the final against a strong St Canice’s Feeny side.

The division 2 final was the last game of the day to be played out in Owenbeg and so attracted the biggest crowd of the day creating a fantastic atmosphere. The game was tightly contested until Feeny scored two goals without reply. Although Gaelscoil Neachtain rallied and worked hard to get back into the game, the goals on the first half proved to be a little too much to claw back. Congratulations on reaching their first division 2 final.
Congratulations too to the girls teams of St Canice PS Dungiven who came runners up in the Division 1 final and to St Johns Dernaflaw who won the Division 2 final. Well done girls
