Youth Notes for this week.
U6 training is now finished up for this season.
U8’s – training returns to its normal slot on Wednesday evening from 7:00-8:00pm on the school pitch. There’s a final U8 Go-Games blitz of this year in Owenbeg on this Saturday 7thSeptember – matches start at 10:30am so we’d ask parents to have all children in Owenbeg for 10am sharp, allowing the managers enough time to get teams organised.
U10’s – training for this year is now finished – massive thanks are due to Fergus, Aidy, Joe, Eugene and all others who helped out at this age group throughout the year – this new management group stepped forward when asked early in the year and showed great commitment to their players and the club during 2013. We’d wish all those players stepping up into U12 next year the very best of luck…..your performances at blitz’s and tournaments during 2013 shows you’re more than capable of handling the U12 standard. All players who’ll be back at U10 next year should continue to practice the skills you learned during the past 7 months so that you’ll improve over the winter and be back in 2014 as even better players.
Our U8 & U10 squads took two teams each to the Brigid Heavron Memorial Tournament in Magherafelt last Saturday. Our U8 teams played 4 games each against Ballinascreen, Bellaghy, Ballinderry and Newbridge. The B Team were unlucky to lose narrowly in all group games. The A Team qualified for their semi-final – a lengthy wait for this match didn’t help preparations and we were beaten by Lavey in a very close game. All in all it was a great day for our U8 footballers, with 23 boys getting lots of great football. It was a similar story for our U10 teams – despite playing really well the B team were unlucky to go out at the group stages. The A team made it to their shield semi-final. They put up a tremendous fight but unfortunately lost out narrowly to a strong Glen team. Well done to all the players who took part and thanks to all the parents who came across to show your support for your children and St Canices Club.
U12’s – after a week off it’s training as normal on Wednesday night from 6:30-7:30pm on the main pitch. Our U12’s are travelling to Magherafelt this Saturday to take part in their annual tournament. We’d ask all eligible players to be at the club for 9am on Saturday morning for onward travel.
U13’s – The first match of this year’s U13 competition, due to have been played on Monday evening, has been postponed – as a result there will be training instead on the main pitch onMonday from 6:00-7:00pm. The opening match will now be played on Thursday night, away to Bellaghy. Bus leaves club at 6:00pm and the match throws in at 7:00pm.
U16’s – any one of the large number of supporters who made the short trip out to Banagher’s pitch on Thursday night will know that the footballing future of St Canice’s is in good hands – the only thing missing from this terrific Championship semi-final performance was a victory.
Best of luck to Faughanvale in the final where they now have a chance to make it a 2013 league and championship double. In an absorbing game, where all but two of those who lined out for Dungiven will still be playing at this age group next year, our players came up just short. It was a game they should probably have won, but it was a high tally of missed chances that denied Dungiven. That said, it was hard to find any fault among this team of young players who gave their all, and who in doing so played an intelligent, quick, and technically strong brand of football. This team is a credit to the management team, the club, and themselves. Teams and performances like this don’t happen by accident but are instead a testimony to the hard work, commitment, preparation and togetherness shown by this large squad right throughout the year. Thanks to all the players for their commitment to improving themselves and their team during 2013 – thanks to the management team of Francis, Paddy, Liam & Paul for their massive effort and meticulous planning for all training sessions and matches. The “sevens” team from this squad who won the Derry competition a few weeks back will compete in the Óg Sport in Glen, Maghera, this Saturday morning against the other Ulster county-winning teams. Please come out and support these lads in this season’s finale.
