Sun Sets on Summer Camp 2012

St Canice’s Summer Camp drew to a close under strong sunshine in O’Cahan Park today.  Over 270 kids between the ages of 4 and 12 took part this year in the biggest camp so far – all but one seemed to come through the week relatively unscathed…..poor Sean Kelly broke his wrist yesterday after a brave hand-block…..get well soon Sean.

The aim of the Summer Camp is to:

  1. Encourage our children and young people to participate in Gaelic Football.  For those who regularly attend our normal coaching sessions during the year our hope is that this week will help them develop their skills and become better players.  For those who aren’t already part of our underage teams we see this week as an opportunity to showcase what the GAA, and in particular St Canice’s, have to offer and to hopefully encourage them to get more involved in the future.
  2. To promote St Canice’s GAC as a central focal point within our community – St Canice’s, like the GAA in general, belongs to the people and the community – there are so many people around Dungiven who are doing so much at all levels within the club to make St Canice’s an open environment where all families can feel welcome.

Through the Summer Camp, and indeed through all activities throughout the year, we want the children to associate many of the positive experiences of their younger lives with St Canice’s and with the GAA.  Based on the number of kids who have attended this week, and the number of laughs heard, it would appear that our efforts are proving to be successful.

As the pitch falls silent now after a week packed with fun and laughter, all that remains are the obligatory thank yous:

First, and most importantly, thanks to all the kids who attended in such large numbers throughout the week – your willingness to participate fully in all the drills and matches helps make the Camp the success that it is.

Special thanks must go to:

  • St Canice’s GAC Committee for the use of O’Cahan Park and all the facilities, and for their complete support of our efforts with regards to running the Summer Camp every year.
  • Limavady Council for their consistent support and sponsorship of our Camp.
  • Derry County Board for the provision of such super coaches – Shauna McCallion, Richard Ferris, Ashleen McCaul & Anthony Begley.
  • St Canice’s Primary School (in particular Margaret Owens) for helping with the provision of equipment for the week.
  • The Underage Managers, who take holidays and give up so much of their time for the Summer Camp and right throughout the year – U6 (Paschal & Ronan), U8 (Bronagh & Tommy), U10 (Brian) & U14 (Francis).
  • All the younger members of our club who have given so much time this week – they embody what the GAA is all about – thanks to Sean Owens, Frank Dillon, Conan McReynolds, Ciaran Steele, Ciaran Mackle, Shea McKeever, Ruari McGonigle, James Higgins.  Even our U14 players are getting in on the act….too many to name – thanks lads.
  • Ladies Football Club – for bringing some proper organisation skills to this week –  thanks.
  • Parents – thanks to so many of you for staying and getting involved in all the activities this week.

If we have left anyone out we’re sorry.  See you all next year………..

Summer Camp:

The hugely popular summer camp runs this week from Mon 16th – Fri 20th July.  There’ll be 270 kids between the ages of 4 & 12 on the main pitch every day learning more about football and hopefully having an all-round good time.  Thanks to all who support this camp: Limavady Council who generously donate some funding; Derry County Board who, whilst under pressure from other clubs, provide us  with  great qualified coaches; St Canice’s ladie’s and men’s underage managers, coaches, and young adult players for all the help they provide during the week; many of the parents who stay to assist; and to St Canice’s Committee who always support us so strongly.  For the first time we also have a Club Derry Coaching Clinic aimed at our U14 & U16 Players – this is a brilliant opportunity for our young footballers to learn from experienced players and coaches – the Clinic will run between 3pm & 5:30pm on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday.

Because of the Summer Camps here will be no mid-week evening training this week for the U6’s, U10’s or U12’s.  Derry County U14 7’s competition in Owenbeg on Tuesday 17th  from 7:30pm. Our U16 players begin their Championship campaign on Thursday night against Ballinascreen. There are a couple of Underage Go Games County Blitz’s in Owenbeg this week: Under 8 Blitz on Fri 20th July – players should report to Owenbeg for 6:30pm.  U10 Blitz on Sun 22nd July – players should be in Owenbeg for 10am.  St Canice’s are running their annual U12 Invitational Tournament on Sat 28thJuly where teams from Derry, Tyrone & Donegal will take part – as with everything, the more help available to us on the day the better – can all our underage coaches do their best to support us on the day please?

Youth Fundraising:

We held a street collection in Dungiven on Sat 14th July – thanks to the small band of committed volunteers who helped out and to the generosity of those who contributed we managed to collect around £1100 – a great result for the Club.  To coincide with the end of the Summer Camp The Harkins will be providing music in the Club Bar on Fri 20th July from 9:30pm – cover fee £3 – we’d encourage as many parents as possible to show their support by either attending or by buying a ticket or two – see Tony or Francis for tickets.

The 2012 Summer Camp began today and we were all blessed with plenty of sunshine – long may the good weather continue!

Wednesday 11th July

Underage Notes:
There will be no U6 training this Wednesday night as the coaches are taking a well-earned holiday. U10s and U12s will have training as normal.
The Club Summer Camp starts on Monday 16th July and runs from 11am – 2pm each day (those kids who have just completed P1 & P2 will finish earlier at 12:30pm Mon-Thurs). All players will stay till around 1:30pm on the Friday when a presentation will bring the camp to a close. For those parents who paid a deposit at the registration night, full payment of the balance is to be made on the Monday morning prior to the beginning of the camp. Parents are asked to ensure that all players come dressed according to weather conditions and that they bring a water-bottle with them. Children staying until 2pm should also bring a packed lunch. We would encourage parents to label all clothing, lunch-boxes and water-bottles as there’ll be more than 250 youngsters attending the camp…..as the numbers are so high we would also encourage parents to stay and help the coaches each day. During the Summer Camp week there will be no Wednesday night training for U6, U10 or U12 players.

There are some fund-raising events planned specifically to support the Youth Football in the next couple of weeks – on Saturday 14th July there will be a Street Collection all day along the Main Street in the town – we would hope that all passing traffic will support us generously.
On Friday 20th July, to coincide with the end of the Summer Camp, we are hoping for a good attendance in the Club Bar where the Harkin Bros will be providing the music – a cover charge of £3 will apply – we would hope that all parents will support us, preferably by attending, but if unable to attend then by buying a ticket or two.

Dates for the Underage Championship fixtures have been added to the Website – we’d ask that parents take these dates into account when planning holidays, to ensure our teams are as strongly represented as possible in their games.

Note from Portarlingtons Feile Officer – Canice McCarthy

To the Players,Mentors and families of the Dungiven U-14 Visiting panel

From the moment they arrived on the Friday until they left on Sunday, these young men were a credit to their Club, their Parish and their Families with their exemplary behaviour both on and off the field. As Portarlingtons Feile officer I interacted with them on many levels ,eg as a hosting parent and a club official and at no time did i witness any negative aspect to their characters, they showed marvellous sportsmanship, tremendous courage, impeccable manners,a warm and friendly disposition and heartwarming loyalty to one another. An incident that springs to mind occurred when 1 of the injured players was returning from hospital late on the Saturday night after the disco, word got to them that he was approaching the GAA centre and to a man they ran to the main gate and applauded his entry into the car park and much backslapping followed. They mixed exceptionally well with their host families and were highly thought of by them which was evidenced by when an impromptu visit to the local swimming pool occured and they had no towels with them on the bus, in excess of 40 towels materialised within 15 minutes! For the host families the only complaint that could have been was that their visit was too short!

The Dungiven and “Port ” teams bonded instantly and Facebook friend requests were sent and phone numbers exchanged before their time to leave had come. Indeed a few tears were shed when they left, so great was their impact in such a small time on all the people that met them and yes I am including some of the young ladies who they charmed at the teenage disco!.The final game on the Sunday morning in which the teams were mixed was great craic with the rules varying from Gaelic, soccer to rugby depending on what the players felt like the moment the ball arrived at them .It finished off what could be described as a near perfect weekend in that perfection was not achieved because no silverware was won and you unfortunately went home with a few injuries which thankfully were not inflicted by our hand! Any photos I have at the moment I have put in an album called ” Feile Peil in Portarlington 2012″ in my profile with open access for all to enjoy. If any of your parents/mentors or travelling party have any photos please send them to canice68@gmail.com and i will add them in!

It was our very great honour to host Dungiven at our Club and look forward to developing closer and enduring links with you long into the future.

Go Raibh Mile Maith Agaibh

Regards

Canice McCarthy.
