1988 – U16 County Champions

1988 Under 16 County Final
Dungiven 2-7
Lavey 0-5

County Final Day at Glen, Dungiven U-16s defeated Lavey in the curtain raiser to the senior final between Lavey and Newbridge. Lavey had defeated Dungiven in Quarter-Final of the Senior Championship Quarter-Final earlier in the year.

In the U16 North Derry Final, Dungiven completely blitzed Craigbane winning by 8-13 to 0-2.  With many of the successful U-15 team of ’86 available, Dungiven entered the game as firm favourites and justified that tag, winning comfortably by an eight points margin.

Leading by 1-6 to 0-1, Dungiven stretched their lead to eleven points a minute after the restart when Dominic O’Connor scored something of a wonder goal. Racing through the centre of the Lavey defence he drilled the ball into the top right hand corner of the net from just inside the 20-metre line. Dungiven, now sensing victory was theirs, noticeably slackened the pace to run out convincing winners by eight points. In something of a lacklustre second half, the winners scored only the one point, five minutes from the end.

Dungiven team: Declan O’Connor, Paul Groogan, Stephen Kelly, Shay McCloskey, Martin McGonigle, Barry McGonigle, Martin McLaughlin, Hugh Mullan (1-0), Ryan Murphy (capt) (0-1), Oisin McLaughlin, Eunan O’Kane (0-5), Dominic O’Connor (1-1,) Geoffrey McGonagle, Gavin Higgins, Chris Quigg. Subs used: D Hasson, K Mullan.

Under the management of Andy Murphy assisted by Anthony Burke this was an exceptional side, remaining undefeated for the entire season. Indeed, many of the panel would achieve further championship success in years to come.
