The week that was:
Our Senior team suffered another home defeat on Sunday with a 7-point loss to Slaughtneil. In a swirling wind the first half was a dour and low-scoring affair – Slaughtneil had most possession but didn’t impose themselves on the scoreboard in the way they probably should have. Dungiven though were unable to take any advantage being offered by the wind, or of Slaughtneil’s disjointed play, and went in two points down at the break, 0-05 to 0-03. Conor Murphy pointed immediately after half time, but this was as good as it got as Slaughtneil began to pick off the scores their possession deserved. A late and well-taken goal by Gabriel McGuigan left a final score of Dungiven 1-05, Slaughtneil 0-15. In truth the gap between these teams on the day was wider than the scoreboard suggests – Dungiven have a lot to work on before they travel to play Ballinderry next week.
Our U8’s had a Blitz in Páirc Ui Catháin on Sunday morning, fielding 6 teams against Faughanvale and Claudy. A brilliant turnout, and all lads did brilliantly so well done to them.
Our U10’s had no matches this week, but we expect to host a Blitz at home on Sunday 24th – venue and times will be confirmed during the week.
Our U12’s continue to train well but had no matches this weekend. The Parish confirmation is on this Saturday so this may affect scheduled matches – parents will be advised.
Our U16s were well beaten in their second league match away to Lavey on Thursday evening, a hard defeat to take because for much of the match Dungiven were arguably the better team. After a slow start Dungiven began to play the better football and went in at half time unlucky to be leading by only a point. A crazy 3-minute spell immediately after the restart saw Lavey score 3 goals and two points to build a 10-point lead. Although Dungiven settled again and played some good football they could not make enough inroads into the big deficit, eventually beaten by 8 points, 3-14 to 2-09. There were positives, including some fine individual performances, for our lads to take from this match, but this game shows that they must be focused and work hard for the whole match or opposing teams will punish them.
Our Minors opened their league campaign on Monday night with an away game at Steelstown. The first ten minutes produced a somewhat disjointed display, failing to produce any flowing moves or taking the chances that were created. After that, the rest of the half was an evenly balance affair and at half time we were 6 points up. In the second half we stepped up our performance to produce a solid display, running out convincing winners in the end.
