Football Matters
Senior Manager:
The executive committee of St Canice’s GAC are pleased to announce Brendan Hughes as our Senior Football Manager for the 2016 season. A former Ulster minor winning manager with Armagh, he also was assistant manager to Armagh seniors. He successfully led his club team Pearse Og’s to an Armagh senior club title in 2009, ending Crossmaglen’s unbeaten run. Brendan brings a wealth of experience and knowledge, and we ask all of our club community to unite behind him, his local backroom team, and our senior players in their bid for success in 2016.
Senior Training for this week: Tuesday at 8pm and Friday at 7:30pm.
Underage Registration:
Thank you to all families who attended our Underage registration session on Sunday evening. For those of you who weren’t able to attend, we’ll schedule a second registration event (times to be confirmed), or registration can be handled by the Underage Coaches – come along to training and tell the Coaches if you need to register and they can give out and/or collect completed registration forms. Underage membership remains at £5 per player or maximum £10 per family.
The St Canice’s Underage coaches for the 2016 season are:
- U8 Stephen McGuigan
- U10 Paul Haran
- U12 Paddy Barton
- U14 Francis Dillon
- U16 Eddie Kealey
- U18 Raymond Tracey
These managers, along with their coaches and helpers, will make a huge commitment to their teams and to our Club during the year. We’d ask that you please support them in whatever way you can.
A huge thank you to all our players and coaches who contributed to a very successful morning’s coaching training with Stephen Poacher on Saturday morning in O’Cathan Park. Over 30 players and more than 20 managers gave up their time, and all enjoyed and hopefully benefited from an informative and enjoyable morning.
Underage Training for this week is as follows:
- U6: Wednesday, 6pm-7pm, Sports Pavilion (indoor)
- U8 & U10 Wednesday, 6:30pm-7:30pm, under lights on Owenbeg 4G
- U12 & U14 Wednesday, 7:30pm-8:30pm, under lights on Owenbeg 4G
- U16 no training this week
- Minors Wednesday, 7-8pm, & Saturday 11am-noon, both at Páirc na nÓg
We’d like to see as many lads as possible getting involved in football this year and would welcome new or returning players at all age groups.
Underage coaches should note that there will be a defibrillator training course in St Canice’s Primary School on Mon 25thJanuary from 3pm-5:30pm. Appreciating that it’s difficult for many to attend at this time it’d be great if some of our coaches could make it.
The Club has organised a free Child Protection Course this Thursday 28th January (7pm – 9pm) and we ask that ANYONE involved in underage coaching in our club attends (including parents who help during training sessions by taking drills etc.). We also extend an invitation to anyone involved in the wider GAA family of hurling, camogie and ladies football – you’re all most welcome to attend. For those who have already completed this course in the past, you should note that it is good practice for coaches/helpers to renew their Child Protection every 3 years.
The Club is running a Foundation Level football coaching course for any of our new coaches and helpers who have not yet had the chance to complete this course. We’d hope to have every coach and parent involved in underage football this year trained to at least foundation level. Course runs on Saturday 30th January (9am – 4pm).
