Youth Notes:
Training runs as normal this week:
U6’s – training Wednesday 6:30pm-7:30pm on St Canice’s Primary School pitch.
U8’s – training at St Patrick’s School (Pitch 2) on Wednesday from 7:00pm-8:00pm. St Canice’s hosted an U8 mini-blitz last Sunday morning on St Canice’s school pitches. Glen Maghera and Ballinascreen brought 3 teams each across to ensure plenty of football was played on a warm summer morning – all teams played really well and it was obvious that Dungiven’s improved play owed a lot to the coaching they received during the recent Summer Camp. Hopefully they can carry this form into this weekend’s Go-Games Blitz, scheduled for Owenbeg this Friday night. Matches start at 7pm sharp so all players should meet in Owenbeg a 6:30pm.
U10’s – training Wednesday night from 7:00pm-8:00pm on St Patrick’s School (Pitch 1). As part of the official opening of Owenbeg our U10 footballers were involved in a Go Games Blitz last Sunday morning. Dungiven had two teams competing and once again all players gave their all, playing with great skill and determination to make this another very successful day for the club. Well done lads. The busy season continues for our U10s with a trip to an invitational tournament in Trillick, Tyrone, on Saturday 3rd August. Early to bed Friday night lads as the bus leaves the club at 8:45am sharp Saturday morning – as attendance will be affected by the holidays we need ALL available players to attend. Please bring a packed lunch and plenty to drink.
U12’s – This Wednesday night sees the second round in the series of U12 league fixtures – full details will be communicated to players’ parents as soon as they are released.
U14’s – Both A & B Teams began their championship campaigns with victories this week. The U14 A team opened on Tuesday night against Lavey in Swatragh. They began in a positive manner, putting Lavey under pressure from the throw in and soon opened up a five point lead. However, Lavey gave a warning that they would punish any slackness by breaking out of defence on several occasions in the first half. From two of these attacks they scored a goal and a point. We regained our composure and scored another two goals to give us a solid lead at half time. In the second half our boys gave a very subdued display and Lavey upped their game, making it a very even second half. Final score 3-15 to 3-02. We were fortunate that our first half performance was enough to see us secure victory, but a much improved performance will be needed in the next game against Magherafelt if we are to progress to the semi-final. Meanwhile the B Team travelled to Derry City to play Doire Colmcille. A terrific first half, built on a really strong work-rate, saw us build a commanding lead. To a man all players showed great discipline in the tackle, and really efficient use of scoring chances to effectively kill the game as a contest before the half time. Although Doire Colmcille rallied briefly early in the second half Dungiven were again able to regain control of the ball and thus dictate the pace of the match. Final score 3-14 to 1-06. This was as good a performance as our lads have shown all year and definitely shows the progress that they’re making – well done lads. This week’s fixures – Tuesday night U14A v Magherafelt – venue TBC. The date & time for the U14B v Drumsurn championship match is yet to be confirmed.
U16’s – No matches last week or this week so training as normal on Tuesday and Thursday.
Minor’s –No game last week. The minors begin their championship on Monday night when they will play Ballinascreen in Swatragh. Please turn out to support the lads.
Cúl Camp: Registrations are still being taken for the Cúl Camp that will run in Pairc Ui Cathain from 19th – 23rd August. Open to 6-13 year olds, the costs of attending are as follows: First Child – £ 37. Second and subsequent children – £ 32. Whilst registration for this Camp is possible right up until the first morning of Camp we’d appreciate knowing earlier how many are planning to attend. Can anyone who wants to register their children please contact Francis or Tony asap. Reminder for all underage players and parents: the wearing of gum shields is now mandatory for all underage training sessions and matches. Whilst St Canice’s players have been more diligent than many other clubs in this regard over the season we have noticed a slight tail-off in players wearing their gum shields. We’d ask parents of younger children to please ensure your children have suitable gum shields and that they bring them to training etc.
Well done to our Senior Footballers who got their championship campaign off to a fine start with an 0-11 to 0-09 victory against a fancied Kilrea team in Owenbeg on Sunday evening. Next up is what’s sure to be another tough encounter against Loup.
