Youth Notes
U6’s – training Wednesday 6:30pm-7:30pm on St Canice’s Primary School pitch.
U8’s – training at St Patrick’s School (Pitch 2) on Wednesday from 7:00pm-8:00pm. Dungiven had 3 teams involved in the Go-Games Blitz in Owenbeg last Friday night – on an unusually summery night all teams equipped themselves well against teams from all over the county and showed a mixture of good skill, good team work and great energy. Well done to all players and thanks to all the parents who come to support the teams.
U10’s – after a late move to accommodate a hurling blitz last week our U10’s will return to their normal Wednesday night training slot from 7:00pm-8:00pmon St Patrick’s School (Pitch 1). Our U10’s will also be involved in a club-based blitz this Sunday 9th June – we’d encourage all parents to try and ensure your children take part in the Blitz’s – it’s disappointing when players who train well do not turn up for matches like this.
U12’s – training on Thursday from 7:00pm-8:00pm in Páirc na nÓg. Our U12’s were in Galbally on Sat 1st June competing against teams from Tyrone, Monaghan and Derry. Beaten in a very competitive group match by Carrickmore, they ran out winners in the other group games against Emyvale from Monaghan and our fellow county-men Kilrea. A quarter-final pairing against an accomplished Errigal Ciaran (Tyrone) outfit proved too much for our team, but they know experiences like this will make them better players all round.
Well done to Cathan O’Neill who was on the St Pat’s Maghera team that retained the O’Farrell Cup in Belfast on Saturday.
U14’s – both our A & B Teams were beaten in the league this week – On Tuesday night our A team travelled to Magherafelt. The game began with a Dungiven point. But Magherafelt soon settled and hit a goal and a point in quick succession. Dungiven had plenty of possession in the early stages of the game, but Magherafelt were always able to remain in front, as every time Dungiven scored Magherafelt promptly replied. At half time there were four points in it, but early into the second half Dungiven reduced the deficit to just one point. However, Magherafelt began to dominate from here on and cut through the Dungiven defence with alarming ease time and time again and were soon seven points up. A couple of Dungiven goals towards the end of the game made it a lot closer on the scoreboard. However, Magherafelt were deserving winners on the night. Our B-Team lost heavily at home to Ballymaguigan this week by 4-14 to 1-04. Although losing at half time the lads had remained competitive throughout and when they scored an early second-half goal it looked like another memorable performance was on the cards – a quick reply-goal from the visitors denied Dungiven a chance to put on any real pressure and their physical superiority helped them build a commanding lead. To their great credit our lads kept going right till the end. U14 Fixtures this Tuesday – A’s home to Newbridge – players meet club 6:30pm. B’s away to Moneymore – bus leaves at Club 6:15pm. Both games throw-in at 7:15pm. Full-squad U14 training as normal on Thursday night 6:30pm – 7:30pm in Páirc na nÓg.
U16’s – no game this week – training on Tuesday night 6:30pm-7:30pm in Páirc na nÓg.
Minor’s no game this week – training continues as normal.
Féile Peile na nÓg is now just around the corner – Dungiven will be hosting clubs from Cork and Scotland and we’ll want to ensure we give them the warmest possible welcome so we’ll need as much help as possible over the Féile weekend. Host families will be contacted soon with more details on the Agenda/Itinerary for the Féile weekend.
There’s a Bucket-Lift to support Youth Football in Dungiven on the Main Street in the town this Saturday 8th June – we’d appreciate as much help and support as possible on the day and would particularly welcome help from the Mums of our young teams – if you think you can stop traffic and can volunteer even an hour of your day to help in our efforts please let Tony Connolly or Bronagh McGonigle know so we can pencil your name into the rota.
This year’s popular St Canice’s Club Summer Camp will run from 15th-19thJuly on the Club Pitch – registration packs will be distributed through the schools this week and there will be a registration evening next week. To mark Derry GAA’s 125 year anniversary there’ll also be a Cúl Camp this year, running from 19th -23rd August – full details available on www.derrygaa.ie.
