Most of our underage training has now stopped for this season….U6, U8, U10 & U12 Wednesday night training is now at an end (though U10’s are likely to get together a couple of times before a late tournament at the end of September – watch out for those text updates!). Thanks to everyone who gave up their time right throughout this year – to all the managers and coaches, to the parents who have helped out, and to the players who attended so well and worked so hard to develop their skills – hopefully they all had fun at the same time.
St Canice’s Annual Tournament on 1st September brought the U12 season to a close for our players in the best way possible as our A & B teams took home both trophies! A schedule of 16 games ran across our two pitches as the players from St Canice’s battled against competitors from Buncrana, Galbally & Strabane. There was no-one to compete with St Canice’s B Team – they won their group comfortably with maximum points, scoring 9 goals and 23 points in the process. The final pitted them against Galbally – after a slow start by the local lads they eventually found their rhythm and cruised to a 4-06 to 0-01 victory. This team’s success owes much to the U10′s who stepped up – well done to all. Galbally edged out Dungiven as A Section group winners, the teams separated only by scoring difference. With Galbally beating St Canice’s narrowly in the group stages they went to the final as slight favourites. A very low-scoring game saw St Canice’s come from a point down at half-time to win the game 0-04 to 0-03. A real battling performance by both teams – whilst Galbally will probably rue a couple of missed chances in the second half, nobody could deny that St Canice’s were deserving winners. The tournament was a great success – the fact that both home teams won was the icing on the cake. Thanks to everyone who gave up their time to help out on the day, to the three visiting teams for making the effort to travel, and to all the players who played the games in a competitive yet fair manner.
It’s another big week for our U14’s as they meet Kilrea in the A Championship Final – this match will throw-in at 1pm on Sat 8th Sept in Celtic Park and, as always, we’d encourage as many as possible to make the trip to give strong support to this special group of players who have already brought so much success to our Club this year. All the very best lads – we know you can do it.
Hard luck to our U16s who were beaten by the narrowest of margins in the U16 Championship semi-final replay against Bellaghy on Sunday. Although there was never much between the teams in footballing terms, the score-board suggested different as, thanks to two quick goals, Dungiven led by 6 points mid-way through the second half. Whilst this seemed likely to be a lead that would allow us to close out the game, Bellaghy never gave up – as they levelled in the final moments it appeared extra time was looming, but with the last kick of the game Bellaghy scored a fine point to break Dungiven hearts. It was always going to be tough for the loser of this fixture between two well-matched teams – hard luck lads.
The U13 competition gets under way this Wednesday night at 7pm in Pairc na nÓg with our B team playing Castledawson. Players should meet at the club at 6:30pm.
