Our U14 squad had another historic and successful weekend – our A Team, for the first time in the Club’s history, won Division 1 of the Ulster Féile.
This elite competition comprised winners and beaten finalists from all 9 Ulster counties – in the challenging and unusual conditions of extreme heat that sunshine that bathed Páirc Ui Catháin, Dungiven recorded very strong wins over Down’s beaten finalists, Carryuff, and Donegal Féile winners, St Eunan’s Letterkenny to top their group. This set up a semi-final in Lavey against Tyrone Féile champions, Moortown. This turned out to be a tough encounter….Dungiven unusually did not take advantage of the assistance the wind provided in the first half and left themselves what appeared to be an uphill battle to make the final. However, a very impressive second half performance meant they ran out 3-04 to 0-07 winners. The team that emerged from the other side of the draw was Kilrea, and so the match was a repeat of the recent Derry County Féile final. It appears that Dungiven peaked at the right time – after a first point of the match from Kilrea, a stunning 10-minute performance saw our lads record 1-08 without reply. Half-time score 1-08 to 0-02. Dungiven showed no signs of nerves in the second half – despite losing a goal early on our players continued to play controlled football – assured handling and great work-rate meant we ran out very impressive 3-11 to 1-03 winners.
Our B Team also had a very successful Féile campaign – they recorded victories in the group stage against Drumsurn, Ballymacnab (Armagh), and group favourites, Castledawson. This set up a Slaughtmanus-based semi-final over Fermanagh’s Derrylin. An impressive performance saw Dungiven record a 1-06 to 2-01 win to make it through to the final. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be for our lads – a strong Slaughtmanus team beat our tired team heavily. Nonetheless, this was a fantastic achievement by our team and they should be very proud of themselves.
